Yuengling Ice Cream Comes to Carlisle

David Yuengling, an alumnus of Dickinson College and the President of Yuengling’s Ice Cream, recently renewed the historic Yuengling ice cream flavor. Yuengling Brewery, which was established in 1829, is America’s oldest brewing company. In the early 1920s, when Prohibition disallowed the sale and purchase of all alcoholic products, the Yuengling Company decided to make their non-alcoholic ice cream available to the public.

Now, almost a century later, Yuengling has brought back this former brand of ice cream. According to Yuengling, “At the time [of the Prohibition], the brewery needed to make a profit, and many other brewing companies turned to a product that most Americans enjoyed. The company made ice cream, which was just that type of product.”

While a student at Dickinson, Yuengling was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He graduated in 1984 with a degree in computer science. After 30 years as part of the computer industry, he began to grow tired of his work programming and networking. Yuengling received a call one day from a family friend, who had the idea that the company should bring back Yuengling’s historic ice cream flavor. In 2014, Yuengling announced the return of the ice cream company.

The Yuengling Ice Cream Company, in the words of Yunegling himself, “has created a lower costing, high-quality product available in twelve different flavors.”

Not only does the product exist with such creative options, it has also reached a good amount of success so far. Yuengling stated that “In [our] first year back on the market, we have been one of the fastest growing ice cream brands, and plan on gradually expanding. For the future, we hope to have thirty flavors and many new products, including ice cream sandwiches.”

Yuengling’s Ice Cream can now be purchased in Carlisle at either the Weis or Giant Supermarkets.
