German 101 Course Offered

For the first time in the college’s history, German 101 will now be offered in the spring, as well as in the fall.

When asked for the reason behind this decision, Associate Professor of German Kamaal Haque said, “[The German Department] wanted to give students an opportunity to begin German either semester, not just the fall. Sometimes students come to Dickinson and only discover sometime in their first semester that they wished they had taken German. Previously, they would have to wait till their next fall. Now, they can begin in the spring.”

That is not the only intention of this course, however: it will also offer more students the opportunity to study abroad. According to Haque, “First-year students who begin 101 in the spring and continue with German each semester we be eligible to attend the Dickinson-in-Bremen program in the spring semester of their junior year.”

As German major Emily Fineberg ’15 commented, “It makes me very happy that more Dickinsonians will be able to discover all the German language and its culture has to offer, as I did.”

Haque also believes that the decision to offer German 101 in the spring will affect the level of student involvement with the campus’ German department. As he said, “We hope this will increase the number of students taking German at Dickinson, and that student interest will be high. We are happy to offer this course opportunity to students who have wanted to start German in a spring semester!”
