Campus Takeover: Kappa Week

The bi-annual Kappa Week, which aims to “ameliorate life on campus,” according to Alvin McRoe ’17, is scheduled to take place from April 16 – April 22. The week is put on by the Xi Kappa Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi and will have events that range from philanthropy to social.

While the origins of Kappa Week are unknown, according to McRoe, the celebration takes place on every campus across the nation that has a chapter for Kappa Alpha Psi.

“Every chapter everywhere has a Kappa Week whether that’s in the spring or in the fall. We do the spring…in April…we usually take over campus….and we try to do as many events as many days as possible.”

This year’s week will have eight events. On the week’s opening day, Sunday, April 16, the chapter hosted a Praise Party, followed by a Phi Nu Pie Day on Tuesday, April 18.

According to McRoe, the event on Tuesday raised funds for a charity organization, set up by Legacy Watkins, the student who recently passed away in Cameroon.

“She started a program called Keep Hope, [where activities range from] talking about food justice and teaching children about how to cook healthily for themselves. We’re raising money to buy supplies… and keep sustaining her program at [Hope] Station, because she was a really good friend of ours,” he stated.

Brother Robert Hill ’17 says he is most excited for Night For a Queen event, scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

“The event I am most looking forward to is the Night Fit for a Queen… Where we recognize all of the wonderful people and wonderful women on this campus!”

Following Tuesday’s event, the brothers are scheduled to host a bake sale on Thursday, April 20. Friday will be marked by the Get AKtive day. The closing day, Sunday, April 23, will see a Black Arts Festival, a Yard Show , an Ole School Bash and a self-defense seminar hosted in the DPS conference room.

According to brother Erik Rivera ’17, who initiated the Black Arts Festival, which is a collaboration with the Black Student Union, the festival will be an unusual way to end Kappa Week.

“Usually, as a last event for the week, we usually do a cook-out, we call it the Kappa Cool-out and Cook-out. And this time we were able to team up with the Black Student Union and do a black arts festival.”

According to McRoe, the Yard Show will also be an emotional event for several of the brothers.

“I am most excited about the Yard Show… This year we are planning on doing it at the entrance of the Kline, the New Kline entrance…” he said.  “There are five seniors who all were initiated in spring 2014, and we’re all graduating together so it’s going to be a very emotional time but it will also be a great time and we’re gonna end it with a blast!”

Brother Pelumii Onabanjo ’19, is especially appreciative of the diverse range of activities Kappa Week will offer.

“It will be an interesting week, we have a wide range of things going on, like community service, a lot of social activities. The week is set up so that we’re touching all aspects of social activities, community based stuff, and then the self-defense workshop on Sunday…. So it should be an interesting week!”

According to McRoe, the events are open to all who wish to participate.

“I just hope many people as possible come out to our events and have a great time because everybody is welcome. Always.”
