The Dickinson Women’s Swim team barely edged out Swarthmore for a 104-101 victory on Saturday, Feb. 9, as the men’s team fell 111-94 in their second straight loss. The women finish their conference schedule 5-2 and tied for second place, while the men finished 4-2 and in sole possession of third place.

The women dominated the distance events, helping them secure the close victory. Caroline Brennan ’15 led the charge as the Red Devils took the top three spots in both the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events. Brennan hit the wall first in the 500 with a time of 5:20.16, then continued on to capture the 1000 in 10:57.70. Right behind her in the 1000 were classmates Carla Vazquez-Ramos ’15 and Nora Snee ’15, with respective times of 11:12.79 and 11:16.88. Carson Gannon ’14 finished the 500 in 5:22.80, good enough for second place, with Snee rounding out the top three in the event. The Red Devils also earned a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 backstroke, as Natalie LeBlanc ’14, Maky Sullivan ’13 and Katie Nirenberg ’16 took the top three spots, respectively.

Ed Barnard ’13 stood out for the Red Devil men as he won two individual races, the 50 free and the 200 breaststroke. He also added a first place finish in the 400 medley relay, where he was joined by Chris Miles ’15, Cameron Phillips ’15 and Zach Yocum ’13. Barnard edged out teammate Kevin Chibbaro ’13 in the 50 freestyle by .21 seconds. Miles added points with a victory in the 200 backstroke (2:00.73) and a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Showing his versatility yet again, first year Theo Hubbard ’16 tallied some points for the Devils in both the short and long-distance events. Hubbard won the 200 butterfly and finished second in the 1000 freestyle. He also was part of the 400 free relay which finished behind Swarthmore’s impressive “A” relay team by only one second.

Both teams travel to Franklin & Marshall on Friday, Feb. 22 to compete in the Centennial Conference Championships. Undefeated Gettysburg enters as the favorite on both sides.
