Second Half Sends Bears Over Devils

The Dickinson College women’s lacrosse team, previously ranked #19 in the country, fell to Ursinus College 8-5 on Saturday, March 28 in a hard fought defensive struggle.
The Red Devils jumped out to an early two-goal lead after senior classmates Kelly Haglund and Carly O’Brien connected for O’Brien’s first goal on the day. Junior attacker Sydney Stern scored the second goal for the Red Devils before Ursinus answered with their own two-goal run to pull even.

Dickinson was quick to kill the Bears momentum once sophomore Maddy Siebold finished an assist from junior Mara Cassidy to put the Red Devils ahead 3-2. O’Brien dished out an assist to junior attacker Jenn Morrissey to give the Red Devils another two goal lead.

The Ursinus Bears refused to go away and answered quickly to cut the deficit to one goal with around fifteen minutes to play in the first half. First-year Elizabeth Sitko scored off an assist from Stern to give the Red Devils another two goal lead.

Ursinus’ offense caught on fire to tie the game at five goals each with just over 7 minutes to play. The Bears converted a free possession into another goal and put the Red Devils away with twenty minutes to play, at 8-5. For the next twenty minutes, the Bears defense clamped down on the Red Devil attack, holding them to only five shots in the second half.

Dickinson had five different players score on Saturday with four different players contributing assists. Sophomore goalie Tara Cuddihy led the Red Devils with four saves and O’Brien led the team with three ground balls.

Dickinson was unable to convert on free possessions going 0-4, which could have easily shifted the momentum should the Red Devils converted. The women’s defense, however, turned in a strong performance and was able to force 18 turnovers on the day against a difficult offensive attack from Ursinus.

The Red Devils fall to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. Currently, Dickinson sits at #6 in the Centennial Conference, and has fallen out of the top twenty five but still is receiving some votes for a rank. The Red Devils play Wednesday, April 1 at 4:00 PM at Biddle Field against Gettysburg College and also will match up against Haverford on Saturday, April 4 at 12:00 P.M at Biddle Field.
