Softball Struggles in CC Action

The Dickinson softball team split a double-header against Elizabethtown on Wednesday, March 25. Both teams were extremely active offensively, as they combined for 40 hits in the two games. The Red Devils scored early in the game, as a three run homerun by Grace Edelson ’16 put them on top 3-0 after the first inning. They continued to add to the score in the bottom half of the second inning, scoring runs off of loading the bases from walks as Nicole Torlincasi ’17 hit a sacrifice fly ball to extend the lead to 4-0. Edelson then singled in a run to make it 5-0. This lead held into the top of the third. The third inning saw trouble for the Red Devils, as Elizabethtown scored four runs, narrowing the lead to 5-4. This score remained until the bottom of the fourth when the Red Devils added four runs to the board, taking a commanding 9-4 lead. They would add another run in the bottom of the fifth to cap of the scoring.

The second game featured less productive pitching, and the Red Devils struggled in the field. Elizabethtown was able to put up six runs in the first, putting the Red Devils in an immediate hole in the bottom half of the first. Nonetheless, the Red Devils answered with four runs off of errors committed by Elizabethtown. After scoring two runs in the third inning, Elizabethtown added four more runs, extending its lead to 12-4. The Red Devils would add two runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Casey Ditzler ’16 was able to drive in Michelle Orden ’17 in addition to Helen Roberts ’17 scoring a run after replacing Jay Abell ’15 due to a hit by pitch, cutting the lead to 12-6 going into the top of the fifth. It would be the closest the Red Devils would get, as Elizabethtown was able to cruise to a final score of 14-7.The Red Devils were unable to snap their losing streak, fallin in a doubleheader at Haverford on Sunday, March 29. They fell behind Haverford after the first two innings by a score of 5-0m and ultimately losing 9-1. Torlincasi produced well at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Ditzler tallied the only run batted in, going 1-for-2.

The second game saw the Red Devils get behind early, as Haverford scored two runs in the first inning. The Red Devil’s hole grew when they gave up a run in both the third and fourth innings, putting them down 4-0 going into the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Red Devils were able to push a run across on a Ditzler ground out that scored Katie Swade ’15.

The Red Devils were able to add another run off the bat of Ditzler, but they could manage no more runs and fell to Haverford 4-2. The loss took the Red Devil’s record at 11-6 overall and 2-4 in Centennial Conference play. Dickinson will take action again on Wednesday, April 1 as they host Messiah at Dickinson Park in a Centennial Conference double header beginning at 5 PM.
