Two Tough Losses for Women’s Lacrosse

Coming off two strong wins against Messiah and Ursinus College, the Red Devil women’s lacrosse team had a tough week, falling to Gettysburg College 11-6, and losing in a heartbreaker against Haverford, 8-7. With these losses they fall to 2-2 in the Centennial Conference with seven games left on their  conference schedule.

Wednesday’s match-up against the #6 ranked Gettysburg looked like it had the potential for an upset with the #22 ranked Red Devils putting together a 5-2 run after the half. After the break Gettysburg scored three straight goals to pull ahead to a dominant 8-1 lead, but Dickinson responded with back-to-back goals from Caroline Clancy ’16 and Maddy Siebold ’17. They were both assisted by Jennifer Morrissey ’16. Those three battled back after another Gettysburg goal, this time with Siebold scoring unassisted and Clancy making the assist to Morrissey. Unfortunately, save for another Clancy goal, the Red Devils were unable to answer Gettysburg’s offensive onslaught and the team fell 11-6.

Saturday brought an even more challenging loss with an 8-7 defeat at the hands of Haverford in what was dubbed the “Snow Bowl.” Playing through a rare April blizzard Dickinson was unable to surmount Haverford’s one point lead, particularly after the second half was cut short due to the snow. The conditions were so poor that the men’s game later that afternoon was cancelled. Haverford got on the board within the first minute and a half, and there was no score beyond that until just after the 25-minute mark when senior Jennifer Morrissey scored on an assist from Maddy Siebold ’17. Haverford came back quickly with five straight goals, but the Red Devils answered with goals from Caroline Clancy and Siebold. Dickinson kept the momentum going at the start of the second half with another Clancy goal, and the first of the game for first year Anne Dunster, with both goals coming from free positions. Haverford extended their lead to 7-5, but a Siebold goal, followed quickly by another score from Dunster, tied the game at 8:47. With just 58 seconds left Haverford scored the winning goal and was able to run out the clock. It was a tough loss with great offensive production and solid defense, led by senior Moira Mahoney, who caused two turnovers and had three ground balls.

Dunster leads the team with 31 total points, with 18 goals and 13 assists. Siebold and Clancy are close behind with 26 and 25 points respectively.

Currently the women’s team are just on the cusp of making the conference playoffs. They currently sit in fifth place, just behind Ursinus and Haverford.

The Red Devils look to change their recent losing streak and to pick up some momentum as they continue conference play against Washington College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. They will then travel to McDaniel College next Wednesday.
