Men’s Soccer Scores First Win of the Season in Blowout

The Red Devils took on the undefeated Gophers of Goucher College on Wednesday, September 14 and Washington College on Saturday, September  17, recording 1 win and 1 loss.

Dickinson handed the Gophers their first loss of the season and broke into win column with a 3-0 blowout. The boys got on the scoreboard after 12 minutes when Ward Van de Water ’19 calmly scored from an assist by Austin Summers ’18. The lead was doubled just before the halftime whistle when Matt Edmonds ’18 provided a neat assist for Kevin Gilbert ’20 to score his maiden collegiate goal. It was a dominating first half for the Red Devils as they recorded a superior 12 shots on target to Gophers’ 2.

The second half was similar to the first as the Red Devils forced 9 saves (out of 25 shots) from Gophers’ goalkeeper Daniel Hendry. The game was decided when Edmonds put the final nail to the coffin with an unassisted goal in the 83rd minute. Frederick Meagher ’20 made 5 saves to achieve his first collegiate shutout win.

In their next match, however, the Red Devils suffered an overtime loss against Washington College as they looked to kickstart their Centennial Conference season with a good result against the Shoremen but found themselves behind in 28th minute as Washington’s Cole Strong scored a solo goal.  Dickinson rallied and finally tied the match  when Macsen Pritchard ’18 headed in a corner kick provided by classmate Edmonds in the 67th minute. The teams headed on to overtime in a physical battle which saw seven players booked and 33 fouls committed from both teams.

The game-winner came in the 97th minute when Shoreman Griffin Bull unleashed a 30-yard screamer into the top corner. It was heartbreaking for the Red Devils, who put up a good fight against their Conference opponent. Jeremy Palcan ’17 provided 7 saves while Meagher made a pair.

The Red Devils move to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 for Conference play. They will host the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday, September 21 at 6 p.m.
