The Red Devils defeated Gettysburg in an impressive 37-34 game. They have successfully reclaimed the Little Brown Bucket.

The Dickinson football team celebrated Senior Day in style. defeating Gettysburg 37-34, in double overtime to reclaim possession of the Little Brown Bucket and earning their first win of the season.

Dickinson jumped out quickly to a 7-0 lead as quarterback Billy Burger ’19 broke free for a 58-yard run and later dove into the end zone from two yards out on Dickinson’s first possession of the game.

The teams traded punts before Justin Geisel hit a 28-yard field goal for the Bullets to make the score 7-3 with 6:11 to play in the first quarter. Gettysburg drove 80 yards on 10 plays to start the second quarter and took a 10-7 lead at the 14:34 until the half thanks to a three-yard run by Justin Davidov.

The Red Devils answered on their next drive as Walker kicked a 45-yard field goal to tie the game with 10:38 left to play in the half.

A 38-yard touchdown pass on their next drive put the Bullets in front, 17-10. Gettysburg was able to hold and force a punt, taking over with 6:16 to play in the half before marching down the field and scoring on a 12-play, 67-yard drive to stretch the lead to 24-10 at the half as Danny Thompson found Ryan Thompson a second time for a two-yard touchdown.

The Bullets intercepted a pass to open the second half but turned the ball over on their ensuing possession when John Minicozzi ’19 recovered a fumble at the Gettysburg 40-yard line.

Following a scoreless third quarter, the Red Devils found the end zone with 13:48 left in the fourth to cut the visitors’ lead to 24-17 as Burger broke free again and used a great effort to power his way into the end zone to keep Dickinson in the game.

The teams traded possessions with Dickinson eventually taking over with great field position at the Bullets’ 42-yard line. Burger scored once again, running 20 yards into the end zone for the game-tying touchdown with 8:16 remaining in regulation.

The Red Devils took the a 27-24 lead on their next drive by means of a 23-yard field goal by Walker with just 3:06 left.

Dickinson was able to hold the Bullets on their next drive and force a 29-yard field-goal with 22 seconds left to prevent Gettysburg from taking the lead as the game headed to overtime when Burger took a knee to run out the clock in regulation.

Dickinson opened the first overtime period with a touchdown as. Burger followed a great push by the offensive line into the end zone.

The Bullets countered on their possession with a 10-yard touchdown pass to force a second overtime period.

The Red Devils’ defense held strong as they forced the Bullets to go for it on 4tth-and-1, but a big stop by Ned Emala ’17 and Tyler Heisey ’18 and a holding penalty on the Gettysburg forced the Bullets to attempt a 42-yard field goal. The kick was wide left and all Dickinson would need was a field-goal to win the game.

They moved the ball to the 10-yard line and Walker easily put the game-winner through the uprights from 27 yards to seal the 37-34 victory.

Burger completed 17 of his 28 pass attempts for 220 yards and ran for 121 more on 27 carries. Stephen Black ’17 had another strong performance, rushing for 93 yards on the day.

Walbert totaled 103 yards on six catches while James Ward ’17 added 95 yards on 5 kick returns and had two grabs for 30 yards.

Walker went 3-for-4 on field goals for the day, hitting from 45, 23 and 27 yards.

On the defensive side, James Turner ’20 led the way with 11 tackles, including 1.5 for losses. Pat Irwin ’17 matched Sherry with eight tackles, along with one for a loss. Emala came up with seven stops and one sack as the Red Devils combined for seven sacks on the afternoon.

The Red Devils improve to 1-8 and 1-7 in the Centennial Conference. They close out the season on Saturday, November 12 at Ursinus College with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
