Listen Up: Good Cry

Noah Cyrus’s new EP Good Cry, which came out at the end of September, in the words of my mother, “sounds depressing.” She is not entirely wrong. The opening song of the EP is “Where Have You Been?” which is probably my least favorite song of the whole EP. All of the words are extremely drawn out which makes the song come off as very whiny. The song that follows is “Mad at You,” which I prefer. Cyrus’ voice is much more soulful in her second song. I think I also like the sound of her voice with Gallant together. I think the mix of pitches adds to the depth to the song that is missing in some of the other songs.

As for “Good Cry,” I can honestly not finish this song. It’s not that I don’t like the lyrics, but it’s very slow. I try skipping ahead, but the song never really seems to pick up.

I really like “Punches,” the fourth song on the EP. Cyrus doesn’t always enunciate in this song, but the song is very sweet and sounds smooth (I don’t if you can describe music that way but it makes sense to me). “Sadness” probably has my favorite lyrics and it is a MOOD. I could honestly listen to it on repeat, but only if I was feeling down. I think that a remix for this song could be really great though. I just feel like if it had a really great upbeat beat behind it could be a bop. The last song of the EP is probably the most interesting.

“Topanga (Voice Memo)” is just an unedited voice recording of Cyrus singing and it sounds great. She sounds very similar to her sister, Miley, although it is unfortunate that I can’t help but compare the two. It’s a really cool song with a bit of country twang to it. I say that Good Cry is a 50/50 album, I enjoyed about half of the songs but there were also a few that I don’t like as much.

If you don’t like sad music or pop country like Jules Struck ’19 though, you probably won’t like this EP.
