Two Dickinson students, Laura Hart ’15 and Caryn Sennett ’15, have recently won the prestigious Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship through the national honor society Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD).
The Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship is one of the many opportunities offered to members of ALD. Membership is available to students who, during their first year, maintained a 3.5 or higher grade point average and are in the top 20% of their class.
The scholarships, which range from $1,000 to $6,000 each, are given annually to 35 outstanding sophomores to be used during their junior year. Members of ALD are eligible to apply for over $150,000 in scholarships and encouraged to actively participate in a wide range of events, from community service events to fun social gatherings that bring students together.
Sennett, an Environmental Studies & Spanish double major, and Hart, an English & Biology double major, both saw the Trow Scholarship as a great opportunity to bring recognition not only to themselves but to Dickinson College as a whole.
required a lot of introspection and self-reflection on my part,” said Sennett, “and I discovered how my involvement in ALD has affected me as a student.”
“Writing the essay gave me an opportunity to express my gratitude for ALD,” said Hart, “what it [had] done for me, and also what I’d done for the organization.”
Both Hart and Sennett plan to attend graduate schools upon graduation. With her Environmental Studies background, Sennett wants to work to improve food accessibility. She has previously, as a Spanish major, worked with the Spanish-speaking community and is interested in continuing to do so in her future line of work. Hart wishes to continue her study of English in graduate school, though she is also interested in attending dental school.
