Public classes. Performance exhibitions. Even the occasional flash mobs are all part of Dickinson’s Dance and Theatre Group’s (DTG) repertoire.

DTG aims to keep campus vibrant by making dance and the arts visible and accessible. The group offers weekly company classes and training sessions, and does not require audition for interested students.

“We have a place for everyone, and we try to highlight everyone’s best features. There is always real diversity of people up on our stage and we want to offer legitimacy to all different types of dancers,” said Sarah Skaggs, Director of the dance program at Dickinson and DTG’s faculty advisor.

The group puts on two pre-professional dance concerts each academic year. The spring concert is scheduled for the weekend of April 25, and will showcase student choreography. Auditions for the spring concert took place this past week for DTG members. Performers will have weekly rehearsals leading up to the show, and the opportunity to dance up to seven hours per week.

Non-performing members are encouraged to help out with ushering or tech work for the shows. DTG also hosts Salons throughout the semester, and invites anyone interested in the arts to showcase their work.

“Everyone here is really passionate about dance, and the performance aspect makes it all the more special,” said Anastasia Putri ’16, who joined DTG her first semester at Dickinson.

One-third of the DTG members are first year students. Members say that the group provides a close-knit community for students new to Dickinson and looking to get involved in the arts.

“Everyone is really friendly and welcoming, and student input is really important. We are like a big family here,” said Abbie Stasior ’16.
