Pierce Brosnan to Speak at Commencement 2019

Pierce Brosnan, actor, producer and environmental activist, will deliver the Commencement address to the class of 2019 on May 19, 2019.

Brosnan will also be receiving a Doctor of Environmental Advocacy, honorary degree for his work in a wide range of environmental projects, including partnerships with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), clean air and water campaigns and marine mammal and wetland protection projects. The film Poisoning Paradise, which he co-produced with his wife Keely Shaye, will be released in June 2019, covering experimental test sites for genetically engineered seed corn and pesticides in Hawaii.

Brosnan is more widely known for his acting career, including roles in the Bond franchise in the 1990s, Mamma Mia! And most recently Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Honorary degrees will also be awarded to Karen Attiah, global opinions editor for The Washington Post, and Adrian Zecha ’52, who creates and operates luxury hotels and resorts. They will be receiving a Doctor of Journalism, honorary degree and a Doctor of International Business, honorary degree, respectively.

At The Washington Post, Attiah was the editor working with Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi journalist believed to have been murdered. She writes about global, social and cultural issues which span the intersections of gender, race and identity. Attiah traveled to Nigeria to document Boko Haram uprisings, as well as to train local journalists in the area.

Zecha has been in the hospitality industry since the 1970s, and over the course of over 45 years he has founded a series of hotel management companies and developed over 100 resorts and hotels throughout the world.

As is tradition at Commencement, The Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Walters Prize at Dickinson College for Global Environmental Activism will be presented. This year, the recipient is the NRDC and the award will be accepted by Brosnan. Joining Brosnan for the acceptance of the award will be Joel Reynolds, NRDC’s western director and senior attorney.  Previous winners have included Mark Ruffalo, Elozabeth Kolbert, Brett Jenks and Our Children’s Trust.
