Volleyball Wins 3-of-4 in Puerto Rico

The Dickinson women’s volleyball team made the most of its trip to Puerto Rico, opening the 2017 season with back-to-back wins on Saturday, September 2 and going an even 1-1 on Sunday, September 3 to finish 3-1 at the Puerto Rico Classico in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Red Devils posted a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday, topping Lasell College (25-14, 25-21, 25-16) and blanking Wesley College (25-19, 25-20, 25-18). They fell to Simpson in an early battle on Sunday, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-18), but bounced back to sweep Widener, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-15), to close out the weekend.

First-year Jamie Singer ’21 had a great start to her collegiate career, leading the way for the Red Devils with 11 kills, seven digs and four blocks against Lasell. Lauren Beecher ’18 added six kills and tallied four blocks.

Tatiana Lopez ’21 put up great numbers in front of her hometown crowd, racking up 24 digs in her first collegiate match.

Singer reached double-figures against Wesley as well, recording 10 kills to go with seven digs. Jordyn Park ’21 racked up seven kills while Park and Beecher each had five. Park recorded two solo blocks and three assists while Kristin Allgaier ’21 ended the match with 23 assists and eight digs. Banker tallied 14 digs and Lopez picked up 10.

Dickinson battled with Simpson, forcing the first set to run long, 26-24. Park was solid at the net leading the attack for the Red Devils with eight kills to go along with six blocks. Erin Bongo ’18 had six kills with Beecher and Singer each scoring five. Alex Berezan ’20 tallied seven to go along with three blocks

Bongo reached double-figures with a team-high 10 kills in the final match against Simpson with Park and Beecher close behind with nine and eight, respectively. Singer contributed seven kills and seven digs.

Allgaier racked up 16 assists in the opener and added 28 against Widener. Lopez tallied the most digs of any Red Devil on Sunday with 18 and 16 digs, respectively.

The Red Devils travel to the Rowan Invitational this weekend. They face Keystone College and Rowan University on Friday night, September 8 before going up against Gettysburg College and Widener University on Saturday, September 9.
