Men’s Basketball Wins 3 Straight

The Dickinson men’s basketball team extended their winning streak to three games with an 89-68 victory over Muhlenberg on Tuesday night, November 21, and a convincing 64-54 win over No. 14-ranked Christopher Newport on Sunday afternoon, November 26.

The Mules got off to a fast start with an early 7-2 lead in Tuesday’s game, but the Red Devils evened the score at 11 thanks to Elijah Wright ’19. Justus Melton ’18 and Bryce Allen ’20 led the Red Devils to a 19-13 lead as the first half began winding down. Muhlenberg stormed back to retake the lead before senior Sam Lorenzo ’18 sank a three-pointer to Dickinson up 22-21, with just under 10 minutes left before the half. Allen made a field-goal and dished out two assists as Mike Hinckley ’19 scored to give Dickinson a 40-32 lead at halftime.

The Red Devils opened up a 10-point lead just after the start of the second half with an alley-oop to Moses Romocki ’18. Melton and Allen continued to make plays as Dickinson’s lead grew to 51-38, and Romocki eventually finished off an 18-9 run with a dunk to bring the Red Devils’ lead to 69-47. Dickinson kept up the pressure on both offense and defense late in the period to secure the win.

Four players reached double-figures while Wright flirted with a triple-double, scoring nine points to go with eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

Melton scored a game-high 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Allen scored 18 points, including three three-pointers, in addition to dishing out eight assists. He also set a school record, hitting his 33rd consecutive free-throw. Romocki put up 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Red Devils’ game against Christopher Newport was much more of a defensive contest, as Dickinson held a slim 10-7 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Romocki scored the Red Devils’ first four points as Hinckley and Melton followed with points of their own. The score stood at just 15-12, with eight minutes remaining in the half. Dickinson finally managed to get some offense going and jumped out to a 10-point lead. The Captains reeled Dickinson’s lead back in but Allen, Lorenzo, Wright and Melton all hit shots from downtown to give the Red Devils a 31-20 advantage at halftime.

Second-half play was much more offensively-minded as the two teams ran the score up to a 49-37 Dickinson advantage with just over 12 minutes to play. The Red Devils led by as much as 13 but Christopher Newport cut the deficit to 6 with just under four minutes to play. Dickinson kept pressure up on the offensive end and pulled away for the final score of 64-54.

Dickinson’s win snapped the Captains’ 26-game winning streak and hands them their first loss of the season. The Red Devils improve to 3-1 on the season and are home on Thursday night, November 30, hosting McDaniel College at 7:30 p.m. in the Kline Center.
