Track and Field Competes at Centennial Champs

 

The Red Devil track and field women’s and men’s squads placed third and fourth, respectively, at the Centennial Conference Championships last Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 24 and 25 at Ursinus College.

The women’s team finished with several exciting first place performances.  The meet started off well, with a first place finish in the 5000 meters by Sofia Canning ’18 in 17:27.41. Kelsey Horowitz ’18 and Tessa Cassidy ’20 placed third and fourth, respectively, with times of 17:52.70 and 17:54.48.  The distance medley relay team, comprised of Caitlin Farrell ’18, Sarah Yanega ’21, Olivia Gerstenbacher ’21, and Allyson Yanega ’21 claimed fifth with a time of 12:37.00.  The 4×200 meter relay team of Natalie Suess ’20, Eryn Nelson ’19, Wrutoe Bonwin ’20, and Liana Tabtiang ’20 also finished fifth in 1:52.13.

Suess performed well over both days of competition, taking first in the 400 meters in 1:00.57 and fifth in the 200 meters in 26.94, as well as anchoring the 4×400 meter relay, which, along with Tabtiang and the Yanega twins, took third in 4:09.76. Gerstenbacher and Farrell were joined by Hannah Gore ’18 and Macallan Fox ’20 in the 4×800 meter relay, taking sixth in 9:57.63.  Naomi Phillips ’18 placed sixth in the shot put, throwing 11.21 meters, and Emily Messer ’20 finished fifth in the pentathlon with 1727 points. The Dickinson women’s squad finished the meet with 74 points, just behind second-place Haverford and first-place Johns Hopkins.

The men’s squad had a great showing as well. Bryce Descavish ’20 finished third in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:55.50, followed by Nathan Udell ’18 in 15:56.97. Duncan Hopkins ’19, Eric Herrmann, Thomas Riordan ’20, and William Dougherty ’18, made up the distance medley relay, which finished third in 10:27.30.  Day one ended on with a thrilling performance in the pole vault, where Kacper Rzempoluch ’21 cleared 4.50 meters for first place, followed by Adam Gamber ’20 in third and Gavin Wood ’21, both clearing 4.10 meters. On Sunday, Herrmann took third in the mile, finishing in 4:16.82. Descavish claimed another bronze in the 3000 meters, crossing the finish in 8:42.68. Devin Glasson ’18 threw the shot put for 14.54 meters, taking seventh place. Ben Sobel ’21 placed ninth in the high jump with 1.70 meters and 10th in the long jump with 5.39 meters.  The Dickinson men’s squad finished with 60 points, behind Swarthmore, Haverford, and Johns Hopkins.

The Red Devils end the winter season with a solid record and return to the track as the spring season opens with the Little Three Championship at Biddle Field on Saturday, March 24 at 11 a.m.
