Field Hockey Continues Successful Season

Six games into their season the Dickinson field hockey team holds a 2-4 record. However, this record does not reflect the true strength of the team.

In the second game of the season against Elizabethtown, Saturday, Sept. 1, the score remained 0-0 through the first half, with Dickinson applying a heavy offensive pressure. Dickinson commanded the field offensively for most of the game though they eventually lost 1-0. In the third game of the season the team took on York College, Wednesday, Sept. 5, with a final score of 2-0 Spartans. Again, the team showed their offensive strength throughout the game with almost as many shots on goal as the Spartans and more than twice as many corners. The defense displayed their ability as well keeping corners to a minimum and allowing only two of nine shots on goal to enter the net.

Heading into their fourth game against Lebanon Valley, Saturday, Sept. 8, the Red Devils were ready to play their best hockey yet. Hannah Grothusen ’22 describes the team’s mindset as “focus[ing] on taking what we learned in our previous games and practices and using them as building blocks. We focus less on our record and more on moving forward and using each contest as an opportunity to improve. We knew we had been working hard in our first three loses so we … used them to fire us up”. Both mentally and physically they are a strong team and were ready for the opportunity to prove it.

They did just that winning 3-2 with goals from Marie Laverdiere ’21, Ellie Werner ’22 and Emma Godfrey ’22. Goalkeeper Heather Meeder ’20 also played a great game saving eight of ten shots on goal, which kept Dickinson’s lead in the second half of the game.

In their fifth game against Shenandoah University, Wednesday, Sept. 12, the Red Devils continued by scoring in the first two minutes.  However, this early lead would not last. Though Meeder would save an impressive twelve goals throughout the game, Shenandoah would take the lead and win 3-2.      This defeat did not dampen the Devils though. The team came back stronger in their first Centennial Conference game against Swarthmore, Saturday, Sept. 15, winning 3-1. As the season continues we can expect to continue to see a strong and fast defense that supports a solid offensive pressure. We wish the women luck in their upcoming homecoming game.
