Let’s Get Reel
The Lego Movie
I can find no fault in this movie. There is not a single bit of The Lego Movie that I did not enjoy. I dare you, I DARE YOU, to not find something you like in this movie. Go see it. That’s an order – it is one of the funniest, smartest written, most endearing films I’ve seen in years. Go watch it, I don’t even want to talk about it for fear of spoiling anything in it. It’s a barrel of fun. Go see it.
Still reading? What do you want? I’ve said my piece. You want elaboration? Fine. This movie is packed to the brim with jokes, and even if they don’t all work for you there is always another one that does within seconds of the last. The animation of brilliant, it’s all CG, but it looks and feels like good stop motion fan-made Lego film. Morgan Freeman is in it, probably at the funniest I’ve seen. Will Ferrell plays the villain and manages one of his funniest and most relatable roles I’ve seen him in. Its chock full of references to pop culture across the past decade, but in a way that is both sincere and pointing out the ridiculousness of certain aspects of our modern culture.
It’s got a rapid-style sense of humor, throwing jokes in and out, sometimes so quickly that you’ll miss them, but almost all of the jokes work. This is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years. Best part, nary a poop or fart joke to be found, all legitimate comedy. You can tell that a lot of effort and heart went into this movie, and I don’t think anyone can leave the theater unsatisfied. It makes you feel good just watching it, it’s a very hopeful movie with a hopeful message. It’s oddly indescribable in a way.
It has this quality to it, this earnestness and wit to it that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s the kind of thing that makes you remember what it was like to be a kid again, and at its core a film about remembering what being a child was like, and how we as adults attempt to suppress that feeling through control. It’s also a film about a mecha-pirate, an astronaut, Morgan Freeman and Batman pulling a heist, so you know, it’s a lot of things for a lot of people. It’s the kind of movie that makes you feel good leaving the theater, and it doesn’t talk down to you like a lot of kid movies do. The Lego Movie should have been a cash grab that at best had some funny moments, but instead it’s something else. It’s something special and I think everyone should go see it.
