After a month-long search, Dickinson’s English Department Faculty has decided to add Gregory Sreirer as its newest assistant professor.
Steirer, who will step into the job in the Fall 2013 semester, held a series of lectures to demonstrate his value to the college when he visited campus on Monday, Jan. 28 to interview for the position.
Steirer pursued his undergraduate degree as an English major with a concentration in film/critical theory at the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently acting as an instructor at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, CA. He is very excited to be teaching at Dickinson this coming fall.
“[Steirer is a] relaxed person with a sense of humor and he cares about students,” said Professor Thomas Reed, the chair of the English Department hiring committee.
Reed is especially excited to welcome Steirer to campus because he will fill the gap of film studies and media of Dickinson’s English department. Steirer’s diverse interests in media combined with his strong background in theory and literature made him an ideal candidate for the position, according to Reed.
“There’s an almost palpable sense of intellectual curiosity and engagement on campus, and I’m really excited to be a part of that,” noted Steirer after his visit.
He was especially impressed by the students he engaged with on campus and expressed excitement at the thought of teaching them.
“Not only am I looking forward to teaching them, I’m looking forward to learning with and from them,” he said.
Next fall Steirer will be teaching two courses: Shakespeare on Film and Writing About the Horror Film. He is extremely excited about teaching both of these courses and about becoming a part of the Dickinson community.
“Dickinson seemed to be a place where students are passionate about everything: their classes, their extracurricular activities, the world in general and also each other,” summarized Steirer. “This translates, I think, [into] an extraordinarily welcoming campus, where students and faculty feel both encouraged to pursue what interests them and also to share those interests with the larger community.”
