The Heras, the new women’s athletic society, will make eating disorders and body image the topic of its first public event tonight at 8 p.m. in ATS.

In partnership with Prevention Education and Advocacy Center (PEAC) and the Women and Gender Resource Center (WGRC), the Heras will host an event entitled “Beautiful Me.” Molly McElroy will be presenting “general background on eating disorders, stigma and body image, and telling her personal story of overcoming her eating disorder,” according to the Dickinson College website.

“I hope this talk serves as a pathway to healing for some and an eye-opener for others. Supporting other women is important, but loving yourself comes first,” Heras co-founder Mary Martin ’17 says.

“Female athletes’ bodies are held to an incredibly impracticable standard that I have personally struggled with,” Martin maintains. “The pressure of maintaining a healthy body that is ready to perform athletically sometimes conflicts with the “sexy” body image that is idealized in today’s society.”
