Annual Fair to Showcase Community Service Programs
CommServ, Dickinson’s community service programming office, will be featuring all 16 of their involvement opportunities this Thursday during their Annual CommServ Fair.
CommServ is an office within the college’s Center for Service, Spirituality and Social Justice
(CS3), which is based in Landis House. According to the program’s webpage, each of the office’s weekly service opportunities that “build and maintain strong community partnerships through sustained interactions.”
“By actively volunteering throughout the school year, students deepen their understanding of the community by forging a sustainable relationship with it and contributing significantly to its thriving” says Yeur Zhang ’19, one of the CommServ program coordinators for the 2018-19 year.
According to Dickinson’s website, CommServ’s service opportunities range from programs such as Artworks!, in which Dickinson students work with and mentor students on art projects, to Prison Inmate Tutoring that connects inmates at Cumberland County Prison seeking their GED with student tutors from the college.
According to Zhang, during the 2017-18 academic year, the CommServ office had more than 150 volunteers who participated in CommServ opportunities and “brought impactful progress to our programs.”
Looking at the year ahead, Zhang hopes to make an impact on Dickinson and the Carlisle community. “Our primary goal is to continue our dedication to bringing positive changes to the community in which we are situated.” She adds that this year, “If possible, we would love to expand the options that we have as well.”
The fair will be held this Thursday, Sept. 13 from 12-1 p.m. on Britton Plaza with a rain location of the Social Hall.
Zhang encourages anyone with questions to email [email protected] or stop by their office in Landis House.
