Response to Athletic Trainers Article
I find the article “Athletic Trainers” on page 5 to be uninformed and out of touch with reality. To consider it to the Athletic Trainers responsibility to provide treatment to “non-varsity athletes”, or ex-athletes such as myself, is both narrow-minded and selfish. I am not sure how it could be considered reasonable to ask medical professionals who work 60+ hours per week to spend even more time with people whom they have nothing to do with. The Athletic Trainers are employed by the athletic department, which has nothing to do with “non-varsity athletes.” This is akin to expecting Math professors to schedule extra office hours to help business or physics majors with calculations.
Athletic training services are one of the privileges that go along with being a varsity athlete. I understand the importance of quality medical care in regards to athletic performace; I had two major shoulder surgeries that eventually played a part in my inability to remain a varsity athlete at Dickinson. What I do not understand the sense of being owed anything by people who are not paid by you or anyone you have to do with. There are plenty of physical therapists around for people like us.
I hope that in the future, our newspaper is based on fact and reason than jealousy and selfishness.
