The Red Devils Women’s Lacrosse team traveled to Elizabethtown College on Wednesday, Feb. 20 for their season opener. They fell 13-11 to the 19th-ranked Blue Jays. Dickinson bounced back, however, on Saturday, Feb. 23, with a 19-9 victory over Saint Mary’s College of Maryland.
Despite the setback against Elizabethtown, the Red Devils kept things neck-and-neck the entire game. They came out of the gate quickly, as Ali Dawson ’15 and Clare Manoli ’13 each posted a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes as the Devils stormed to a 5-3 lead. Elizabethtown answered, however, getting the last four goals in the period to take a 7-5 lead into halftime. The Blue Jays continued to add to their lead in the second half, before the Red Devils, led by a pair of goals from Katie Iverson ’16, scored three straight to tie the game 9-9. Unfortunately they would never take back the lead, as Elizabethtown responded with two straight years before the teams traded goals en route to the 13-11 victory for the home team. Iverson highlighted the day for the Devils with a hat trick in her Dickinson debut.
A joint effort by Carly O’Brien ’15, Kelly Haglund ’15, and Lauren Jonas ’14 secured the team’s win against Saint Mary’s as the Red Devils never trailed. O’Brien, Haglund, and Jonas all had hat tricks. Jen Morrissey ’16 added a pair of goals and two assists. Amanda Morse ’13 and Grace Morelli ’15 split time in goal, each making three saves.
“We are a strong team this year with a lot of talent,” O’Brien remarked. “We’ve been working hard and have had a successful preseason. The win against Saint Mary’s is just the beginning for us.” O’Brien didn’t shy away from making clear the lofty goals she has for the team, stating, “Our goal this season is to make it to the conference tournament, and we have the chemistry and ability to come out on top.” The Red Devils will host Susquehanna University on Thursday, Feb. 28 in their home opener.
