The Dickinson women’s lacrosse team welcomed Susquehanna for the Red Devils’ home opener on Thursday, Feb 28. The Devils dug themselves an early hole and were unable to completely recover, falling 18-14.
Dickinson hung close in the beginning, as Kelly Haglund ’15 tallied a pair of early goals as the Devils trailed 4-3 with 15:23 to play in the first half. Susquehanna would go on a 6-0 run from there, however, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. A late first half goal by Ali Dawson ’15 and a quick strike to start the second from Haglund made things interesting, as the Devils clawed back to make the score 11-6. This, unfortunately, wouldn’t last, as three straight strikes from the Crusaders made it 14-6. Susquehanna would bring their lead to 17-9 with 10:55 to play, before Dickinson would close with five of the six goals scored down the stretch. Haglund recorded her fifth tally of the day with two seconds left to cap off her phenomenal day in a losing effort. Haglund added four draws, four groundballs, and forced four turnovers in the loss. Linzi Berstein ‘13, Carly O’Brien ’15, and Clare Manoli ’13 also scored despite the setback. Grace Morelli ‘15, in goal for the Red Devils, finished with 11 saves.
The Crusaders outshot the Devils 38-31, as Dickinson was called for 29 fouls compared to just 21 for the visitors. The Red Devils also received three yellow cards.
The team’s loss to Susquehanna drops their record to 1-2 on the season. The team will be traveling to Messiah College on Wednesday, March 6.
