Men’s Soccer Drops First CC Game
The Red Devils opened up conference play with a 1-0 loss at Ursinus on Sept. 21. Dickinson has now lost two games in a row, dropping them from ninth to seventeenth in the d3soccer.com poll. The losses drop them to 5-2 overall, but, they still have eight games left in their conference season.
The Ursinus loss may have been influenced by the previous game as the Red Devils were missing key scorer Derek Kachadurian ’14, who was red carded late in the Messiah game. Regardless, the Bears capitalized on an opening in the corner of the goal within the first 15 minutes to post the one and only goal of the game.
Ursinus worked hard to pressure the offensive players and took some chances in their own offensive end.
Goaltender Jacob Schreer ’16, made two strong saves to keep the Bears from generating a large lead.
The teams possessed the ball fairly evenly and both played strong defense, limiting the opportunities to score. Ursinus outshot Dickinson 9-6 and led in corner kicks, 4-1. Jacob Schreer ’16 started in goal for Dickinson and made two saves, and the Ursinus goalie only needed to make three en route to a shutout.
The win moves Ursinus to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference season. Every team in the Centennial has played one conference game thus far. “Our schedule this year is tougher than ever,” said Jamie Martin ’14. However, the team believes they have a realistic shot to win the conference, and they remain the only Centennial school ranked in the top 25.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, Dickinson will face long time Centennial Conference rival Johns Hopkins. Last year, the Red Devils were able to pull out a 2-1 win against the Blue Jays in the inaugural match at Miller Field. Johns Hopkins, although having a down year at 2-4-1 overall, has consistently been one of the strongestcompetitors in the Centennial Conference. They have the most championships, 8, in the twenty-year history of the Centennial Conference.
The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. and will follow the women’s game in the first Homecoming Weekend games at Miller Field.
