Women’s Soccer Ties Swarthmore
Dickinson women’s soccer faced three tough teams over the past week, coming out with a loss, a draw, and a loss against Alvernia (7-1), Swarthmore (5-2-1), and Messiah (6-2-1). The 0-2-1 week brings their overall record to 4-3-2. Kerri Bergin ’15 received the Student Athletic Advisory Committee Red Devil Athlete of the Week honors for her efforts in the previous week, which included last-minute goal to force the Red Devils into overtime against Haverford earlier in the season and a strong defensive game in the 2-0 win over Shenandoah.
On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Messiah visited Miller Field and came away with a 2-0 win. The visitors dominated on the defensive end, holding the Red Devils to zero shots. Messiah has won four of the last five national championships and has only lost four games over the last five seasons.
Due to inclement weather, the game against Swarthmore was moved from Saturday, Sept. 21 to the following day. The game was even throughout as Swarthmore outshot Dickinson 22-16 but neither team appeared to completely dominate the game. As is Centennial Conference rules, the game went into two overtime periods after regulation play ended with a 0-0 draw.
Sudden death was filled with close calls, long balls, and several close misses from both sides. In the final minute, Swarthmore broke free and carried the ball towards Red Devil goaltender Charlotte Armour ’16 but they were called for an offside violation with just seconds left in the match.
“I think that the reason why we came out with a tie that game was because every single player wanted to be on the field and had so much fight in them,” said Bergin.
Dickinson travelled to Alvernia on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Dickinson kept up an attacking front but was unable to convert against the Crusaders’ defense. The Red Devils held a 12-5 advantage in shots as well as a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. The game was scoreless until the sixty-eighth minute when the Crusaders connected following a passing combination that got through the Red Devils’ defense. Unrelenting, Dickinson continued to fight back and managed a last minute shot by Jackie Geisler ’17, but, Alvernia made the save and held on for the win.
The Red Devils will host Muhlenberg on Saturday, Sept. 28. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. and is the first homecoming weekend game at Miller Field. Dickinson seeks its first conference win against the 3-3-1 Mules, who are 1-1 in conference.
