#13 Men’s Soccer Back to Winning Ways
The Red Devils bounced back from two defeats last week with two consecutive wins. On Wednesday, Sept. 25, they beat non-conference opponent Mary Washington, 2-1, before beating longtime rival Johns Hopkins 3-1 on Saturday, Sept. 28. Dickinson is now ranked #13 in the d3soccer.com national poll.
Derek Kachadurian ’14 was a leader near the goal in both games and ignited several offensive attacks.
Against the Blue Jays, Dickinson did a fantastic job of controlling the ball by using short, quick passes and looking to both sides of the field. Kachadurian, Javier Mena ’14 and Alfred Hylton-Dei ’16 took some very close shots on goal early on in the first half. Finally, it was Connor Gavey ’16 who put the ball in the net off a rebound to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead in the first 15 minutes.
Hylton-Dei capitalized on energy and confusion near the goal in the end of the first half. He shot a rocket into the net after collecting the rebound from Kachadurian’s earlier attempt on goal to put the Red Devils up 2-0.
The Blue Jays had some interceptions in the middle of the field, but overall the Red Devils controlled possession. Hopkins’ Mitsuhashi tallied a goal on a free-kick to put the pressure on just before the halftime break.
Jamie Martin ’14 and Mena had a successful break and Martin was able to hit the net off of Mena’s one-time cross pass to solidify the score at 3-1.
Against Mary Washington, the Eagles were quick to tally a goal. After much back and forth play, Mary Washington’s Tanner Carlton scored off of Carlos Vasquez’s assist to get the Eagles on the board first.
It was not until the second half when Kachadurian and Mena teamed up once again to put the pressure back on the Eagles. Mena’s assist to Kachadurian earned the Red Devils a goal in the sixty-fourth minute and tied the game at 1-1. Martin, another strong forward for Dickinson, found the net in the last 15 minutes to grab the lead just before the end of the match.
Most of the possession was in the middle of the field and that showed in the shots on goal stats. The Eagles only had three more shot attempts than the Red Devils (13-10).
Goalie Jacob Schreer ’17 made 9 successful saves to help Dickinson earn the win.
The Red Devils are currently 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. They are tied with F&M, Muhlenberg, and Haverford in fourth place.
Dickinson travels to Haverford on Wednesday, Oct. 2, and to Gettysburg on Saturday, Oct 5. Haverford is 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Last season, Haverford defeated Dickinson twice en route to winning the conference championship. This season, Gettysburg sits atop the conference at 2-0, but they are 2-6 overall.
