Women’s Soccer Remains in Playoff Hunt
The Dickinson College women’s soccer team played two conference games this week, winning one and losing the other. The Red Devils slipped 3-1 against the Gettysburg College Bullets on Wednesday, Oct. 9, but following it up with a 3-0 win over Washington on Saturday, Oct. 12. Dickinson now ranks sixth in the conference, hovering on the bubble of tournament play that would extend their season. Four teams make the conference playoffs.
Dickinson took on Centennial Conference rival Gettysburg under the lights at home but had difficulty connecting on the field. Heading into the game, Roz Savoie ’14 spoke to the energy that the team had moving into the match after winning against Bryn Mawr. “After a tough few games…scoring 7 goals felt great.” Against Gettysburg, the Red Devils fell behind 1-0 after scoring on their own goal heading into the half. The Bullets took advantage of their corner kicks, the first of which was the shot deflected into Dickinson’s net by a defenders foot. Gettysburg came out strong in the second half with a goal just three minutes in giving them a two goal spread, again off a corner kick.
The Red Devils’ attacking efforts seemed to fall short against Gettysburg’s midfield which showed tremendous skill at intercepting passes and applying good pressure throughout the game. Jenna Lamb ’16 was the only Red Devil to find the net in the seventy-eighth minute to put Dickinson on the board after breaking free of her defender for an unassisted goal.
Dickinson came out on fire against Washington College, looking to improve their in-conference record after suffering a loss earlier that week. Washington currently ranks towards the bottom of the conference, but the win secured the Red Devils a good position moving forward if they can manage an upset in their coming games. Liv Licata ’14 scored twice in the effort, just four minutes apart in the second half. Dickinson outshot Washington 19-5 and held a slight advantage in corner kicks. Deanna Ballard ’17 came into goal with 30 minutes left to play and managed two saves for the Red Devils.
Dickinson now stands at 2-2-2 heading into their game against Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. After facing the Blue Jays at home, they travel to Ursinus on Saturday, Oct. 19. With four conference games left and currently sitting outside of the playoff picture, Dickinson needs to win these games to fulfill their goal of making the playoffs.
