Bullets Re-Claim Bucket

The Dickinson football team lost to longtime rival Gettysburg on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the battle for the Little Brown Bucket by a score of 42-7. The Bullets got off to a fast start by scoring on each of their first two possessions and stretched the score to 28-0 at halftime. The Red Devils slip to 3-6 overall with the loss.

The Bullets jumped out to an early lead on their first possession. After receiving the opening kickoff, they capped a 13-play, 71-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by running back Kyle Wigley. Defensive back Mark Manganaro ’16 blocked the extra point to hold the score at 6-0.
After the Red Devils’ offense went three-and-out on their opening possession of the game, the Bullets put together another long scoring drive to go up 13-0 with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Red Devils’ offense continued to struggle into the second quarter as they only managed a total of one first down on their first three offensive possessions.

After a short punt by the Red Devils gave Gettysburg great field position, the Bullets quickly added another touchdown to extend the lead. On the third play of the drive, running back Eddie Hutchins scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 29-yard run. The Bullets successfully added a two point conversion to make the score 21-0.

The offense for the Red Devils finally got a little momentum going on their next drive. Starting on their own 29-yard line, they moved the ball into Gettysburg territory thanks in part to a 17-yard pass from quarterback Mike Carmella ’15 to Cedric Madden ’16. Dickinson failed to convert on a fourth down on the Gettysburg 30 yard line and turned the ball over on downs.

With just over a minute to go in the first half, the Red Devils again gave the Bullets a short field thanks to a very short punt. It only took the Bullets four plays to add another touchdown, this time on a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zach Miller to receiver Chris Amicone.

Down 28-0, the Red Devils’ finally put points on the board on their first possession of the second half. Carmella lead the offense on a 7-play, 73 yard scoring drive, highlighted by a 22-yard pass to Todd Smolinsky ’14. Shawn Wilson ’16 rushed for 38-yards on the drive, including a 5-yard touchdown run to cut into the Bullets’ lead.

The Bullets answered right back however, covering 71 yards in nine plays to score another touchdown, and all but put the Red Devils away. Hutchins ran in from one yard out for the score. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Hutchins added another one-yard touchdown run to close out the scoring at 42-7.

This Saturday, Nov. 16, Dickinson returns home for their final game to face Ursinus, who is 6-3 and beat the Red Devils 48-7 in last season’s finale.
