Swim Sinks Swarthmore on Senior Day

The Red Devils men’s and women’s swim teams both turned out great performances on Saturday Feb. 8, when they defeated a tough Swarthmore team. It was Senior Day at the Kline Center as the underclassmen helped reward the senior class with a victory. The men’s team swept aside the Garnet with a final score of 153-52 while the women won in a closer contest, 114-91.

Caroline Brennan ’15 helped Dickinson jump out to an early lead after winning the 1000 Yard freestyle by more then 25 seconds with a time of 10:58.07. She also came in a close second in the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle events. Teammate Carson Gannon ’14 beat out Brennan by less than one second in the 500 freestyle and completed a successful Senior Day with a third place finish in the 200 freestyle as well as a win in the 400 relay where the captain swam the third leg. Caitlin Klockner ’16 stood out once again for the Red Devils as she was the lead leg of the 400 relay and added on with two more victories in the 100 and 200 freestyle races.

The women improved to 10-3 overall on the year and 5-2 in the Centennial Conference.

The men’s team experienced an equally successful day as they swept first place in every single event. For the senior class, Jason Adams ’14 continued to impress as he won the 50 and 100 freestyles, as well as leading in the 400 relay. Captain Brandon Gauthier ’14 piled on victories with the anchoring leg of the 400 relay and individual successes in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke.

Alex Bennett ’17 stepped up with key wins in the long-distance races, placing first in both the 1000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Cameron Phillips ’15  and Chris Miles ’15 rounded out the day for the Red Devils with wins in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke, respectively.

The victory improved the men to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in Centennial Conference.

Speaking about the win, Coach Paul Richards said that both teams “are right on target for where we need to be for success at the Centennial Conference Championships” and that he was “happy to send our senior class out with a win over Swarthmore”. He also added he felt that the meet was a “hard fought ‘team’ victory for the women and a decisive win for the men.”

Both teams are preparing for the Centennial Conference Championships, which will be held at Franklin & Marshall on the weekend of Feb. 21-23.
