Dickinson Sweeps DuCharme Invitational
The Dickinson men’s and women’s track and field teams broke four school records, three Kline Center records and took home both team titles at the 2014 DuCharme Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Dickinson dedicated the 800 meter run to former Red Devil Rob Jansen ’11, who was tragically killed in a mountain climbing accident. Rob’s parents, Bill and Peggy, presented a plaque to the winner of event, Jonathan Jackson ’14. Jackson and Rob Sansevere ’14, who were former teammates of Jansen, went one and two in the 800 meter, with times of 2:01.05 and 2:01.35, respectively.
Aaron Pannell ’14 broke two school records and a Kline Center mark. After setting the school record with a 6.45 seconds in the preliminary race, he finished first in the 55 meter finals with a time of 6.47. He crushed the school and Kline Center records in the 300 meter with a time of 35.54. Furthermore, Pannell finished fourth in the long jump.
Ryan Steinbock ’14 had a victorious day as well, breaking the school mark and the Kline Center record with a time of 4:13.27 in the mile. Four Red Devils followed close behind Steinbock, resulting in Dickinson dominating the event with a one through five finish.
Alex Strenta ’14 won the 3000 meter, crossing the finish line with a time of 8:57.12. Mu Mu ’15 finished first in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.92 and claimed a fourth place finish in the 200 meters as well, with a time of 23.95.
The Dickinson men were unstoppable in the relay events, winning the 4×200 and the 4×800 meter relays. The Red Devils also placed second overall in the distance relay and third in the 4x800meter relay.
Olivia Schumann ’15 earned Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week honors for shattering the Kline Center record in the 400 meters with a time of 59.81. Schumann also placed first in the 200 meters, crossing the finish line in 26.51. First-year Jamie George had a strong second place finish in the 300 meters with a time of 43.95 and classmate Rikka Olson broke the school record in the pole vault, clearing 3.45 meters.
Maeva Riley ’14 started the meet off strong with a first place finish in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:13.45. Classmate Emily Miller finished right behind Riley, clocking a time of 19:19.71. Sara Patterson ’14 claimed a first placed in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:20.32 where Dickinson claimed five of the top seven spots in the event.
Taylor Ludman ’14 returned to the track to win the mile with a time of 5:21.50. Mackenzie Shelgren ’16 held on close behind Ludman to achieve a second place finish with a time of 5:22.84. Ludman also placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.30.
In the field events, the women also took home many victories. Kristina Link ’15 placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.66 meters and cleared 1.52 meters in the high jump, resulting in a third place finish. Sally Bolasco ’16 and Gillian Ferko ’15 placed second and third in shot put, respectively.
The Red Devil women were also successful in relay events, winning the distance medley relay and placing second and third in the 4×800 and the 4×200 relays, respectively.
Dickinson will next compete at the Centennial Conference Indoor Championships on the weekend of Feb. 28-Mar. 2.
