Lowry Era Begins With A Statement Win
New women’s lacrosse head coach Kim Lowry had great success in her first game as her Red Devil squad defeated Elizabethtown 18-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Ten different Red Devils scored as they avenged last season’s 13-11 loss.
A year after scoring 23 goals in her rookie campaign, Caroline Clancy ‘16 scored Dickinson’s first goal of the season early in the third minute of the game. Less than twenty seconds later, Jennifer Morrissey ’16 added the second goal of the day. Playing in her first collegiate game, Maddy Siebold ’17 scored the game’s third and sixth goals, sandwiched around goals from Sophie Waine ’17 and Catie Ledwick ’16. Katie Iverson ’16 knocked in the seventh, and another one from Ledwick made it 8-0 less than seven minutes into the game.
Later on in the half, Waine scored again and Clancy tallied two more to give Dickinson an 11-0 lead at the half. Clancy was one of two Red Devils to record a hat trick as Siebold also scored twice more in the second half.
The defense and midfield did an excellent job of keeping the ball out of their own zone and allowing the Dickinson offense to control a majority of the possession. Goaltenders JoJo Auerbach ’15 and Tara Cuddihy ’17 only needed to make one save each as they each played one half, respectively.
Emily Gaucher ’17 began the scoring in the second half with a goal in the first minute. Siebold’s second made it 12-0, and a free position goal from Allison Carroll ’17 made it 13-0. Sydney Stern ‘16, who led the team with four assists on the day, scored the fourteenth goal and goals by Iverson and two from Jess Greene ’14 finished the game at 18-0.
Not only did they dominate on the scoreboard, but the Red Devils dominated the statsheet as well. They won all 20 draw controls and won the ground ball battle 17-10. They outshot Elizabethtown by an astounding 38-2.
The women’s lacrosse team plays again on Saturday, Feb. 22 in a neutral site game against St. Mary’s of Maryland. Last season, Dickinson defeated St. Mary’s 19-9. After a 7-9 campaign in 2013, the Centennial Conference preseason poll picked Dickinson fifth, but with several returning starters and impact first-years, the Red Devils expect to be a factor in the hunt for playoff spot.
