Dickinson Comeback Squandered by Susquehanna
The Dickinson Red Devils football team suffered a heartbreaking loss on Saturday to the Crusaders of Susquehanna University, falling 42-35.
The Crusader were the first on the board when Cusco completed a 67-yard bomb to Patrick Cutillo to make the score 7-0. The home team scored on their next drive as well, with Cusco hitting Cutillo again on a 2-yard strike to put Susquehanna up 14-0.
After punting on the following drive, the Red Devils stopped the next Crusaders drive when Bryan Latorraca ’18 grabbed Dickinson’s second pick on Crusco of the game, leading to a 3-yard touchdown run by Cedric Madden ’16 to put the Red Devils on the board, down only 14-7. Susquehanna struck right back though, as Cusco ran into the end zone from 5 yards out to put the Crusaders up 21-7 with 4:34 left in the first half. The Red Devils managed to squeeze one more touchdown in before the half though, as Madden found the end zone again on another 3-yard run to narrow the gap at halftime to 21-14.
Dickinson tied the game up on the first possession of the second half as Anders Overhaug ’16 found the end zone one a 4-yard run. Susquehanna stuck back though, with Cusco completing another touchdown pass, giving the Crusaders back the lead, 28-21.
After a costly turnover, Dickinson trailed by 14. The Red Devils, refused to give up though, scoring on their next drive with a 20-yard touchdown run by Overhaug. Dickinson stopped the Crusaders on their next drive and then drove the ball 81 yards down the field in 7 plays before Overhaug found the end zone again, this time on the ground from 3 yards out. To tie the game Susquehanna fired back with what tuned out to be the deciding score of the game, as Cusco ran into the end zone for yet another touchdown, bringing the score to 42-35 with 2:21 left to play in regulation. The Red Devils would fall by seven.
With this loss, Dickinson falls to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils return next week to face the 2-1 Moravian Greyhounds.
