Women’s Basketball Finishes Season with Wins
It was a dominant week for the Dickinson women’s basketball team. The Red Devils won both of their games, closing out the season on a high note. On Wednesday, Feb. 14, the Devils skillfully beat Franklin & Marshall (9-15), winning 74-63, and on Saturday, Feb. 17, the Red Devils beat Washington College (6-19) 71-50.
The Red Devils and the Diplomats played a hard fought first quarter with the lead never exceeding two points. Halle Maeda ’21 put Dickinson on the board and then Hannah Heiring ’20 went on a streak, scoring the next eight points for the Reds Devils. At the end of the first, the Red Devils led 14-13.
The game saw more action in the second quarter as senior Kassidy Lesher ’18 dominated in the paint, giving the Red Devils a 34-29 lead at halftime.
As the third quarter started, Lesher kept up her superior play. Lauren McBride ’20 and Emily Padalino ’20 added to the score board, giving the Red Devils a comfortable lead.
The Red Devils built an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Franklin and Marshall would not go away easily. Lizzie Becker ’21 sealed the win, coming up with clutch late free throws.
The player of the game was Lesher as she scored a career high with 27 points and notched her 17th double-double of the season. She also grabbed 14 rebounds and went 9-13 from the free-throw line.
The last game of the year was a huge success for the Red Devils beating Washington College by double digits.
The Red Devils came out strong with Heiring and Becker hitting back-to-back three-pointers to start off the game. Heiring was a force to be reckoned with, giving the Red Devils a 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lesher played at the top of her game in the second, giving the Red Devils a comfortable 35-24 lead at halftime.
The Red Devils weren’t done yet though, as Becker hit back-to-back layups to start the half. Washing College made a run, resulting in the Red Devils being ahead by just eight points, but Maeda hit a three-pointer bringing the lead to double digits.
McBride and Lesher dominated play towards the end of the game as the Red Devils outscored Washington College 23-11 in the fourth quarter, giving the Red Devils a win of 71-50.
Lesher finished her fantastic collegiate athletic career at Dickinson College, scoring 23 points and tallying 17 rebounds for her 18th double-double of the season. Lesher moved into 9th place all-time in the Centennial Conference with 982 career rebounds.
The Red Devils finish the season 10-15 overall, and 10-10 in the Centennial Conference.
