Men’s Lacrosse Stumbles in Greene Turtle Classic

The Dickinson Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to Owings Mills, Maryland over the weekend to compete in the Greene Turtle Classic, falling short against two strong teams.

The Red Devils faced an early deficit against Nazareth, giving up five unanswered goals to end the first period in a 5-0 hole. Rob Kendall ’16, tallied the first goal by the Red Devils early on in the second period. Nazareth answered with two consecutive goals, controlling the period. Tyler Llewellyn ’17 ended Nazareth’s streak, putting the score to 7-2 with a goal of his own. Nazareth quickly answered, scoring 24 seconds later, and led at the half, 8-2.

In the second half, the Red Devils picked up the pace, scoring four goals of their own, while reducing the deficit going into the fourth period to 11-6. The Red Devils saw four different scorers strike in the third period, as Llewellyn, Dylan Maher ’18, Connor Murphy ’18, and Chris Menard ’16 all found the back of the net.

The Red Devils started off hot to begin the fourth period, scoring three unanswered goals and reducing the deficit to 11-9. Tyler White ’15, Mitchell Andres ’18, and Kendall all scored, making it a ballgame. After trading off goal for goal, Llewellyn scored with 43 seconds remaining to make the score 13-11 Nazareth, the closest the Red Devils would come to a comeback, as this stood as the final score.

Llewellyn led the Red Devils with three goals and four shots on goal. Kendall followed right behind his teammate, scoring two goals with three shots on goal. Nick Baxter ’16, had a strong game between the pipes, as he was able to block fourteen of the twenty-seven shots he faced.

The loss dropped the Red Devils to 2-4 on the season.

The Red Devils looked to rebound in their second contest the following day against Lynchburg. Murphy struck first within the first few minutes, giving the Red Devils an early 1-0 lead. The rest of the period would give the Red Devils more difficulty, as Lynchburg followed Murphy’s goal with five of their own, putting the Red Devils in a 5-1 hole at the end of the first period.

The second period saw the Red Devils scoring early once again, as Kobi Frankel ’16 was able to record a goal less than two minutes into the period, decreasing the deficit to 5-2. After a Lynchburg goal, Mike Allen ’17, scored one of his own, closing the gap to 6-3. The last three minutes of the half saw Lynchburg go on a run of three unanswered goals, leading its team into the locker room with a 9-3 lead over the Red Devils.

The Red Devils opened the second half with a run of their own, as they scored three unanswered goals within the first half of the third period, to make the score 9-6. White notched two of the goals, and Ace Sudah ’15, also contributed a goal to close in on Lynchburg’s lead. The rest of the period saw both teams trading goals, as Lynchburg was able to extend its lead to a 12-7 at the end of the period.

Lacrosse will get back to work on Wednesday, March 25 as they begin their Centennial Conference campaign at McDaniel.
