Field Hockey Fall in Centennial Conference

Last week saw mixed results for the Dickinson Field Hockey team. The Red Devils won in overtime on the road against Shenandoah 3-2, then suffered their first loss of the season at Haverford, 5-1. Despite the loss, their record remains an impressive 4-1 overall.

In Dickinson’s away match on Wednesday, September 15 the Hornets struck first with a goal 8:10 into the first half. However Dickinson answered just twelve minutes later thanks to a penalty corner goal by Jamie Wright‘19, off a nice assist from her classmate Chelsea Kramer’19. Tied at the half 1-1, the game appeared close from all angles as Shenandoah held the advantage in shots, 11-4, and in corners, 5-3.

Dickinson took a late lead when Kayla Bendinelli’19 beat the Hornet goalkeeper in the 62nd minute for her first goal of the season. Caroline Karwel’19 would also assist on the play. Yet the Red Devil defense couldn’t hold when Shenandoah scored just five minutes later to tie up the match 2-2. With only 3:14 left in the second half the game was destined for overtime. Facing sudden death the field hockey team rallied and pulled off the win in walk-off fashion thanks to the game winning score by Junior Catherine Perlmutter. Classmate Merritt Davis was instrumental in feeding Perlmutter with the winning assist.

The win was Dickinson’s second overtime victory this season, after beating Virginia in a similar matchup back on September 5th. Sophomore Freddie Bancroft came up with several big saves in goal for the Red Devils and Dickinson’s attack was able to force seven penalty corners in the second half.

Coming off the dramatic overtime win, the Red Devils traveled to Haverford on Saturday for their Centennial Conference opener. The Ford attack proved to be too dynamic for the Red Devils, with three of five goals coming in the first half.

Haverford jumped out to an early lead with two goals coming in the first 10 minutes of the game. From there it was tough for Dickinson rebound. Merritt Davis had another strong game, putting the Red Devils on the board with 3:45 remaining in the first half thanks to assists from Sophomore Amber Dey and Caroline Karwel, who added to her impressive season total of 4. The Red Devils therefore had some momentum at the half but could not add to their lone goal due to impressive play between the pipes by the Fords.

Davis led the Red Devils with five shots on goal and Freddie Bancroft tallied eight saves in her second game of the season. The contest certainly demonstrated a strong effort from the Red Devils that was not indicative of the final score. Dickinson once again came away with more penalty corners, 10, to Haverford’s 7. Coach Dallmeyer’s team also struck eight shots on goal, compared to Haverford’s 13.
