The Dickinson men’s lacrosse team started off the month of April with a couple of tough losses to Ursinus and Haverford. They lost to Ursinus on Saturday, April 2, 14-10 before falling to Haverford on Sunday, April 10, 9-8.

The Red Devils got on the board first against the Bears as John Lockwood ’19 capitalized on a man-up opportunity. Ursinus countered with five straight goals to bring the score to 5-1 at the end of the first quarter. They scored again at the beginning of the second to extend their lead to five goals. Tyler Llewellyn ’17 scored back-to-back goals and Dylan Maher ’18 added a score of his own to pull Dickinson within two. The Bears scored two consecutive goals before halftime to re-extend their lead by four, leading 8-4 at intermission.

The two teams traded goals to start the third quarter, as goals by Chris Menard ’16 and Tucker Carney ’18 were each answered by Ursinus. The Bears found the net two more times before the end of the quarter to go up 12-6 going into the final period. The Red Devils outscored Ursinus 4-2 in the fourth with goals by Menard, Maher and Lockwood but fell short when regulation ended, losing 14-10.

Menard finished the game with three goals and Lockwood, Maher and Llewellyn added two each. Graham Parsons ’16 controlled 4 GBs and John Bower ’18 caused a pair of turnovers. Nick Baxter ’16 made 11 saves.

Rob Kendall ’16 scored two back-to-back goals to answer the Fords’ prior goal in the second quarter to put the Red Devils up 5-4 with 3:38 left in the first half. Haverford answered with two goals, 17 seconds apart, to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.

The two teams traded goals back and forth in the third quarter as Charlie DeMuth ’19 and Menard answered goals by the Fords to bring the score to 9-7 going into the fourth. Chase Phillips ’17 scored off an assist from Lockwood for the first and only score of the final quarter of play as Haverford managed to hold the Red Devils off, securing a 9-8 victory.

Carney and Kendall led Dickinson in scoring with two goals apiece. Baxter made 13 saves and corralled four ground balls. Ryan Campbell ’18 won six face-offs and controlled three ground balls.

With these losses, the Red Devils fall to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to play Washington College on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The next few weeks will prove to be pivotal as the men’s team looks to get into prime position for the conference tournament. With their 1-2 record in conference, they are currently tied for sixth place with Swarthmore. However, they will have plenty of opportunity to control their own destiny as they play four consecutive games against conference opponents down the stretch.
