Softball Falls to Gettysburg, Split with Washington on Senior Day

From April 2 to April 10, the Red Devils’ softball team went 2-4 in conference play. The Red Devils split two double headers, one against Gettysburg College and another with Washington College. They lost both games of a doubleheader against Haverford College. The women’s record currently sits at 4-6 in conference play after the six games.

On Saturday, April 2, Dickinson faced off against Haverford College at Dickinson Park. The Red Devils got off to an early lead thanks to an RBI-double from Grace Edelson ’16. However, Kendall Chambers of Haverford launched a three-run homer in the top of the fourth that gave Haverford a lead they would never relinquish. In game two, Dickinson was able to flip the script. They coasted to an 8-1 victory, as Killian Kueny ’19 tossed six innings of shutdown relief and went 2-4 with three RBIs. Shortstop Nicole Piet ‘16 added to the offensive explosion by going 2-3 with two RBIs.

On Friday, April 7, at Gettysburg College, the Red Devils fell in both games. The Gettysburg bats were too much for Dickinson, as the Bullets totaled 13 runs on 20 hits in the two games. On the other side, Dickinson couldn’t muster up enough offense against dynamic Gettysburg pitching. It was a tough afternoon for the Red Devils as their record in conference play dropped to 3-5.

Dickinson regrouped two days later against Washington College on Senior Day. Michelle Orden ‘17 tied the game in the bottom of the fifth by stealing home. Dickinson then went on to score two more in the fifth to complete the come-from-behind win 4-2. Kueny led her team to victory again by throwing a complete game. In game two of the doubleheader, the Red Devils mounted a serious comeback by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. However, the comeback bid fell a bit short. Washington College ultimately won 7-5.

It was a nice scene at Dickinson Park for the team’s three seniors, who received recognition in between games one and two of the double-header against Washington.

Seniors Nicole Piet, Grace, Edelson, and Casey Ditzler all leave behind a great legacy. As four-year starters and captains in 2016, the three players have broken records and been an integral part of Dickinson softball in their tenures as Red Devils.

In the games over the weekend there was an outpouring of support from family and friends in the Dickinson community, which says volumes, not just about the caliber of players that they are, but also about their quality of character. Dickinson Athletic Director Joe Giunta spoke about Nicole, Grace and Casey individually and had only the nicest things to say.

Despite not having a strong overall record (7-19), the Red Devils have more or less been able to stay in the hunt in conference play, as the team stands sixth in the conference. The women will have a chance to improve that standing with six more conference games this season. The Centennial Conference Tournament begins on May 6.

This week the team squares off at Frostburg State on Thursday and then with another double-header on Saturday at Swarthmore.
