Women’s Lacrosse Earn Centennial Conference Berth

The Dickinson College Women’s Lacrosse team has ended their regular season play on a strong note, going three for four in the last two weeks. Their only loss came against the No. 4 nationally ranked Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. Following that game the Red Devils earned a No. 5 seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs and a first round matchup with Haverford College.

Last Wednesday’s match against Muhlenberg College featured an incredible comeback with the Red Devil Women’s Lacrosse Team overtaking the Mules 13-10 after an early 9-5 deficit. The Red Devils started off strong, getting on the board first after a mere 21 seconds with a Jennifer Morrissey ’16 assist to Anne Dunster ’19. Muhlenberg countered with three goals of their own, but another Dunster score and a converted free position from Sam Marmo ’19 to junior Maddy Siebold  put the game at a tie with a little over 12 minutes to play in the half. The visiting Mules pulled ahead to lead 6-5 at the half and kept the momentum going when the second half resumed, scoring 3 more goals to lead 9-5 with 23:24 remaining. In the next six minutes the Red Devils responded with five unanswered goals to take a slim 10-9 lead, with scoring from juniors Sophie Waine and Talene Bush, as well as Marmo, Caroline Clancy ’16 and Morrissey. Muhlenberg tied it up with 15 minutes left, but Dickinson answered with three more goals and ran the clock out for the 13-10 victory. Both Marmo and Dunster recorded hat-tricks, while goalie Tara Cuddihy ’17 made six saves.

Unfortunately the Red Devils did not fare as well against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, falling to the Diplomats 15-3, who remain undefeated in Centennial Conference play. Dickinson battled the Dips in the first half, maintaining a tie game with 18 minutes left in the half. Despite excellent defensive plays by senior Moira Mahoney and Siebold ’17 the Red Devils fell behind 9-2 at the half. At the start of the second half, Dunster scored Dickinson’s third goal of the game off an assist from Marmo, but that would be the end of scoring for the Red Devils. Franklin & Marshall came away with a double digit victory to secure the top seed in the playoffs, while Dickinson fell to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

This Wednesday, Dickinson takes on Haverford in the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs, and the Red Devils will be out for revenge after losing a heartbreaker against the ‘Fords in the “Snow Bowl” earlier this season.

It has been an impressive season for the women’s team and coach Kim Lowry. They have been one of the most consistent Red Devil team’s throughout the spring season. Let’s hope they can make a run in the conference tournament over the weekend.
