The Red Devils earned the No. 4 seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs after a loss to F&M.

The Dickinson field hockey team had to work overtime at Juniata College on Wednesday night, October 26, but Catherine Perlmutter ’17 scored just 1:15 into the extra period to lead the Red Devils to a 1-0 victory.

The Red Devils dominated the match on paper, outshooting the Eagles 17-3 at the net and 15-5 on penalty corners. Dickinson did not allow a shot by Juniata in the first half and held a 10-3 advantage in the second period before recording the only shot in overtime, which turned out to be the game-winner.

Eagles goalkeeper Kylie Edwards kept the hosts in the game, turning away seven shots while Meredith Shephard added a defensive save to keep the score locked at 0.

Dickinson’s goalkeeper, Freddie Bancroft ’18, faced just one shot on the night, making the save to add another shutout on the season.

The Red Devils broke the school record for goals in a season with their 55th on Wednesday night and raised the school mark for points in a season to 146 with their 36 total assists on the year.

Things didn’t go so well for the Red Devils on Saturday, however, as they suffered a 3-1 loss  to No. 8-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, October 29 in their regular season finale. Dickinson came out strong and produced some quality chances early on in the match, but the Diplomats would be the ones to capitalize first, putting a goal on the board in the ninth minute of the contest as Melanie Consiglio found the back of the cage with 27:35 remaining in the first half.

The Diplomats struck again just over a minute later as Mel Gula scored off an assist from Annie Horsley to extend F&M’s lead to 2-0 at the half.

The Red Devils continued to put up a good fight throughout the match and created some strong chances while holding off a potent Diplomat attack. F&M’s relentless offense  would get through, though, as they struck again when Nicole Bodo tipped in a pass from Sarah Schannauer with 19 minutes left to play in regulation.

Dickinson refused to give in however, and eventually broke through to spoil the shutout as Perlmutter redirected a shot from Chelsea Kramer ’19 into the back of the cage with just under 13 minutes remaining in the second period.

That would be the end of the scoring, however, as the F&M defensive effort proved effective in stopping any more scoring from the Red Devils, as Ilianna Santangelo made five saves for the Diplomats.

The Diplomats held a 10-9 edge in shots while the Dicksinson had the advantage in penalty corners at 8-5.

Bancroft and Heather Meeder ’20 split time in goal for the Red Devils with Meeder coming away with 3 saves, including a full-layout dive to turn away a shot late in the contest.

The Red Devils slipped to 11-6 overall and finished 6-4 in the Centennial Conference to earn the No. 4 seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs.

During the regular season, the Red Devils totaled 56 goals, averaging 3.3 per game and scoring on 20 percent of their shots. Perlmutter became the program’s all-time leading scorer, with 46 goals, as well as the record holder for most career points, with 146. Chelsea Kramer became the single season school record holder for both points and goals.

They have since faced Haverford in the first round at home on Wednesday, November 2.
