Tennis Suffers Losses at Wilkes, Gettysburg

The Dickinson men’s and women’s tennis teams both suffered losses to Washington College last week.

The Dickinson men’s and women’s tennis teams both suffered losses at Washington College on Saturday afternoon, April 15. The men lost 8-1 and the women fell 5-4.

The men had strong showings in the top two doubles flights but came up short, dropping 8-6 and 8-5 decisions as the Shoremen took an early 3-0 lead.

Samuel Loring ’18 joined classmate Shawn Diniz ‘18 in the top doubles spot and earned the Red Devils’ only point of the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the third singles flight.

Lucas Burstein ’20 fought hard in the sixth flight, but suffered a 7-5, 6-3 loss.

The women trailed 2-1 after the final doubles set but made up some ground with strong play in singles. Classmates Lydia Fox ’19 and Madeleine Kuhns-Baione ’19 put Dickinson evened the score, winning the third doubles flight, 8-2.

Joana Nunes ’17 won the third singles match 6-3, 6-2, while Kuhns-Baione and Fox claimed the fifth and sixth flights with identical scores of 6-1, 6-0.

Both squads squared off against Wilkes University on Monday, April 17, with the men dropping their match 8-1 and the women suffering a 6-3 loss.

James Demakos ’19 took the lone point for the Dickinson men on the day, winning the fifth singles flight 6-4, 6-4. Derek Chen ’19 also battled hard in the second singles flight but couldn’t pull off the win, falling in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 14-12.

Nunes and Madison Parks ’17 put the Dickinson women on the board with an 8-2 win in the top doubles flight before Lauren Altschuler ’18 and Olivia Shea ’20 came from behind to win the second flight, 9-7, giving the Red Devils a 2-1 lead at the end of the doubles.

The Colonels stormed back, however, to claim five of six singles sets to take home the win and stay undefeated.

The Red Devil men fall to 2-10 overall while the women slip to 3-7 overall. The Red Devils return to action on Wednesday, hosting Gettysburg College in another double-header with the men, starting at 4:00 pm.
