Professor Spotlight: Emily Marshall

Emily Marshall is an assistant professor of economics at Dickinson.

Marshall was an economics major with a math concentration at Denison College. She also received a masters and doctorate in economics from the University of Kentucky. She said that she enjoyed college more than graduate school because “everything is certainly more serious (in graduate school). Plus you always have to focus on one thing only: your dissertation.”

Marshall participated in many different activities while in college . She was president of Phi Gamma Delta, captain of the varsity field hockey team and served on various academic committees.

Marshall is very involved at Dickinson’s campus. In addition to being a full-time professor, she is also the assistant coach of the women’s field hockey team, director of the quantitative reasoning center and advisor of two clubs: the Dickinson College Republicans and the women’s lacrosse team.

Apart from teaching and coaching, Marshall also does independent research on different topics concerning economics and education. She is particularly interested in researching the best method to teach economics at a college-level and examining students’ way of learning the subject. Marshall said that one of the reasons she enjoys her job is that she is able to share her research with her students. In her free time, Marshall likes to hang out with her family, friends and her dog, Hank. Marshall was also just married in her hometown in Kentucky.
