Club Spotlight: WDCV
Since its first broadcast in 1959, WDCV has been “the voice of Dickinson College,” as the station ID says. Over 50 years later, the station is still playing “spicy tunes and hot tracks,” according to station manager Justine Hayward ’18. WDCV currently has about 35 DJs from students to faculty and staff to members of the Carlisle community. One such staff member and DJ is Ken Shultes, associate vice president of sustainability and facility planning, whose show, “The Sustainability Jam Hour,” is “really, really cool,” said Hayward. The community DJs are also a big aspect of WDCV, as they add “a whole different perspective” to the station.
This weekend will be WDCV’s fourth 24-hour live show, in which many of the 35 active DJs will play music “from 8:00 a.m. on Saturday to 8:00 a.m. on Sunday,” said Hayward.
In the past, the 24-hour live show has been an annual event, but Hayward says that the station is going to try to do one every semester “to bring all the DJs together, because since we have our individual shows it gives us a chance to connect as a station.”
This event has been popular the past three times WDCV has hosted it and “people get really pumped about it because the station is open the whole time so anyone can come in with a DJ,” said Hayward.
WDCV started “as an AM operation…with broadcasts confined to the Dickinson campus,” according to its website, but has expanded significantly to “stereo broadcasting in 1983,” and, more recently, web casting and streaming. “The main purpose of WDCV-FM,” as stated on its website “is to provide a forum for overlooked, suppressed or underrepresented voices and music.” WDCV is also the only non-profit radio station in Carlisle, according to the radio’s website.
Amy Soba ’21, DJ of the show “Maxin’ and Relaxin,’” said “I decided to join WDCV because I’ve always really loved listening to music and discovering new artists.” She added that it has been one of her “favorite clubs on campus because it’s like taking one hour once a week to just listen to some of your favorite music.”
Shows that will be playing throughout the 24 hour live show this Saturday and Sunday include “When the Music Stops,” “Indie-cisive,” “Maxin’ and Relaxin’” and “Time Warp.” WDCV is also “cosponsoring a concert series with MOB,” said Hayward, which will be happening later in the semester.
