Listen Up: Tanerélle
As my New Year’s resolution, I decided not to focus on going to the gym more often or eating more balanced meals, I chose to expand my musical horizons and explore genres I enjoyed but did not often listen to.
That is how I came across Tanerélle. Actually, I found Tanerélle on my friend’s Instagram story when she shared her most listened to artist of 2019 on Spotify. No matter how I came across Tanerélle, I am incredibly glad I did.
Tanerélle is an R&B/Soul artist from Atlanta, Ga. While I am not well versed in that particular genre of music, I think it is safe to say that she embodies it well.
Her music is smooth and sultry and while her lyrics are often about being in love or heartbroken, they aren’t the same old boring pop lyrics.
Two of my favorite songs of hers differ in tempo, but both are very calming. The first song, Mama Saturn, is the first Tanerélle song I heard and I instantly fell in love with her deep voice and the simplicity of the instruments and sounds she used in her song. While the song is romantic, all of her songs have a sense of empowerment and strength in them as well, something I do not often find in mainstream pop songs.
My second favorite song, Boys Like You, has more of an upbeat tempo. All of her songs, as well as her album art, has a strong sense of female empowerment. In addition, I really appreciate that she is not a well known artist in the music industry with under 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
Although she does not have an extensive amount of songs to listen to, I continuously play the songs she has recorded on repeat. These songs are perfect for cleaning your room, hanging out with friends, or studying for a quiz or exam.
My album of 2020 most definitely includes at least three Tanerélle.
