Hearing “I just sold my last kidney for some smart whip, and I feel great” bellowed in a BBC Radio voice was truly a jarring experience. While listening to Jim Legxacy’s newest single “Aggressive,” I experienced a plethoria of emotions. 10 seconds later though, I felt like I was flying.
“Aggressive,” the debut single off Jim Legxacy’s upcoming project “Black British Music” is a tear-inducing thumper which showcases an artist finding a whole new gear. Production sample-flipped guitar plucks and relentless 4-beat-pattern kick drums construct an emotional dancefloor for Jim Legaxcy’s gorgeous falsettos to fill the scene from wall to wall. Chopped vocal samples, combined with fluttering crescendo’s create gorgeous moments reminiscent of Frank Ocean or Sampha’s best work.
The emotional songwriting in “Aggressive” recounts a verbally abusive relationship, alluding to throwing “words like frag grenades,” yet not being able to escape.
“Aggressive” feels like Jim Legxacy’s most complete work in a promising discography, and it’s had a chokehold on my playlist since its release. Ideally, this song will break Jim Legxacy’s music into the American market, because I need to hear more.
