Adrianne Lenker in concert is a blessing like no other; which I have had the pleasure of seeing three times now. The third time seeing them was an amazing band that Adrianne is the lead singer of, Big Thief, at their most recent concert in Philly this October.
Not only was Big Thief just as magical and emotional as their music is on any streaming platform, but their musical talents, per usual, met with their amazing stage presence, making for an amazing experience. Alongside their fantastic performance, their set list for the entire show had hit after hit, playing songs such as “Simulation Swarm” and, my personal favorite from their set list, “Shark Smile.”
The band made sure to also sneak in older, popular and new songs off their latest album. Their crafted set list made the experience one that every audience member could enjoy, whether they were a newer fan or an older fan, a skill not every artist or band is capable of doing.
Though in comparison to Big Thief’s last show, their newest show played more of their popular or well-known songs rather than their older stuff. The band absolutely knew their newer audience, which was recently gained after the overwhelmingly positive reviews of their release of “Vampire Empire,” and made sure to play songs the newer audience would be able to recognize.
Still, the mix of the set list was perfectly done, even though there weren’t as many older songs of theirs that I would have liked to hear. Nonetheless, the experience was excellent, even if I didn’t get to hear my other favorite songs of theirs, such as “Contact.” Which they did play in their last concert, so I wasn’t really expecting them to play it again, but nonetheless, one can hope.
If you haven’t given Big Thief a listen yet, I would absolutely recommend tuning in. Not only are their instrumentals amazing, but Adrianne Lenker’s lyricism is arguably the best there is out in the music industry right now. And once you tune in, I would absolutely recommend grabbing tickets to their next tour if you can!
