Dickinson College’s varsity and junior varsity teams have dominated the campus’ athletic facilities since the college’s opening. For those students unable or unwilling to meet the rigorous commitments of the teams, sports have been relegated to physical education classes and casual games with friends.
A new initiative, however, pioneered by Student Senate, is hoping to fix that.
Senate passed the Clubs Sports Council, a project in the works for nearly three years, in the first weeks of the Spring 2013 semester. The council was created as a ruling body of organizations to help allocate resources and solve individual problems amongst the members.
In an interview with The Dickinsonian, the council’s current advisor, Roberts Simels, described the group as a “representative voice” for students, noting that members would be able to sit down and discuss different issues that burgeoning club sports deal with regarding their teams and find a solution for both sides.
The first meeting of the Club Sports Council was held on Thursday, Jan. 31, during which members of the Student Senate, Club Sports representatives and other interested parties were present. Different issues were discussed, including one member who voiced their concerns about the inability to host home games because of lack of field space.
“The first meeting was productive,” said Austin Davis ’15, the current chairman of the council. “The club sports executives brought issues to the table that they seek to resolve collectively as one Club Sports Council in consultation with the Student Senate.”
The Club Sports Council is currently working on writing a constitution to determine voting, club admissions and budget. Projections are that the group will be finished with the constitution by the end of the Spring 2013 semester.
“I think [the council] will be successful in advocating for the interests and needs of the Club Sports at Dickinson,” said Davis.
