Four students and Michael Guido, lieutenant of operations for Dickinson’s Department of Public Safety (DPS), met in a HUB side room at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,. After a few minutes of casual conversation, the group convened to discuss previously established goals, upcoming events and the efficiency of the group. Each person took some time to fill out a team work evaluation survey which will analyze the effectiveness of the club. The members then discussed their answers and concluded that their teamwork has been effective overall, which has led to positive advancements as a club.
This group of people makes up the executive board of the Public Safety Advisory Board (PSAB). This club is a student-run organization that was created four years ago by former students, among them Julian Cohen-Serrins ’13, the current student head of PSAB. Under the leadership of Cohen-Serrins and through strategizing with Guido, this club has transformed into a student liaison group whose objective is to promote communication between the student body and DPS.
“The major thought behind this from my perspective is to provide a window of transparency into public safety,” explained Guido. “We are totally transparent as much as regulations allow us to be.”
PSAB is also responsible for information distribution regarding student conduct and citations and addressing rumors.
“We are a well working resource,” emphasized Cohen-Serrins. “We are effective at bridging this gap in communicating to the student body. We want students to have a good rapport with DPS and the board. We want students to have a lot of open communication.”
PSAB has partnered with DPS to assist with the DPS Meet and Greet on Britton Plaza and hosted dorm talks with students in Drayer Hall.
“[The dorm talks] functioned as question and answer sessions for people to come and talk to Lieutenant Guido and Officer [Jason] Randalls, just to address issues that they had with DPS, or questions that they had about how it worked,” said PSAB member Samantha Moyer ’15.
Some of their upcoming events include organizing a team for Relay for Life and hosting another dorm talk.
Club meetings are on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. in HUB side room 205. For more information, contact Cohen-Serrins at [email protected]
