Highlighting Book Censorship

Bleep! Censored!
All around Dickinson College campus, flyers have been posted with these exclamatory words alerting all members of the community that it is Banned Books Week.

Banned Books Week, which is a national movement focused on literacy and ability to read anything, has come to Dickinson. According to librarian, Malinda Triller, “Banned Books Week is something that we celebrate every year and it calls attention to the issue of censorship.” The movement will last from Sept. 22 until Oct.8. Triller added when asked about its importance, “The privilege to read is an important one, not one that should be taken for granted.” In the Waidner-Spahr Library, there is a large display of books, such as “The Sandman: The Kindly Ones” by Neil Gaiman or “Dangerous Drawings”, as well as small red flyers, which say, “I read a banned book.” Both books are representative of the theme that is chosen for this year’s recognition of Banned Books week which is Graphic Novels. Of the theme, Triller said, “Chosen to show the different things that cause writing to be controversial, whether they are challenged or banned.” Of Dickinson’s own celebration, Triller said, “It is also to make people aware of the wide variety that we have in our collection.” More information is available about the movement on its official website, www.bannedbooksweek.org.
