Men’s Lacrosse Bumps, Sets and Hits for the Red Cross
The Dickinson Men’s Lacrosse Team hosted its 8th annual Volleyball-a-Thon on Oct. 12. The event took place at the outdoor sand volleyball court located by the Quads.
Originally scheduled for Oct. 11, the lacrosse team decided to reschedule it for the next day due to inclement weather.
The team started playing at 6 a.m. and ended at 6:30 p.m.
“Regardless of rain or shine, the Dickinson community came out to support the team as well as the Cumberland County Red Cross,” said Eric Dircks ’16.
The team was divided into four different groups and each group played for the duration of three hours, so there was constantly volleyball being played. All the proceeds were donated to the Cumberland County Red Cross.
“It was a small effort that will go a long way,” said Joe Gorgi ’14, who is a captain of the team. “We’ve raised over $6,000 this year for the Cumberland County Red Cross.”
Collectively, over the eight-year span, the lacrosse team has raised over $50,000 for the Red Cross.
“We raised the money from neighborhoods and mostly sponsors,” added Gorgi. “Local restaurants donate food and drinks throughout the day.”
Local vendors such as Mesino’s, Weis Markets, George’s Pizza and Subs and Little Caesars all donated an assortment of food and drinks for the event.
“The event would not have been possible had it not been for the great cooperation provided by the vendors around town,” said Dircks.
The team also encouraged social groups such as fraternities and clubs to select hour-long time slots to come play against them. Anybody who wanted to play was able to without any charge.
“Its just a great opportunity for our guys to get involved in a fun, charitable event and do some good in the community,” said Dave Webster, the head coach of the men’s lacrosse team.
Food and music was provided at the event for those who didn’t want to play volleyball but wanted to support a good cause.
